Boleros Azules: Photographs from Tibet and Yunnan Province
by Paulo Acosta Cabezas

November 2008

From the Artist, Paulo Cabezas:
"This exhibition of photographs taken during my travels through Tibet and China in 2006 is dedicated to three individuals, my grandfather and both of my parents. My grandfather, Manuel Acosta, instilled in me a curiosity to explore other cultures and study civilizations. My father, Pablo, introduced me to the rhythms of Boleros, Rumbas, Rancheras, and Tangos, and the literary art of poetry. From this exposure I understood art's ability to distill pain. My mother Cruzita made the difficult decision to bring our family to California, opening up new possibilities as well as obstacles. Since our arrival in San Francisco, I have perceived them not as my parents but as my great friends and together we have overcome emotional challenges. Tuesday, November 4 will mark a historic day in the United States and while humans around the world will be watching in anticipation to find out who will be our country's next leader, I would like to spend the evening with you celebrating the achievements of my friends and family who have strived to be leaders in their own local communities.
