Twists and Turns Through Time
Paintings by Matthew Christenson
September 15 - October 3, 2009

Through setting up a fusion of time periods and cultures using only a few symbolic references, Matthew Christenson illustrates the cyclical nature of our world’s social, political, and environmental climate.

Matthew expresses the inspiration behind his paintings, "The lands and artwork of Peru have always fascinated me, and my work borrows from the visual accomplishments of the pre-Columbian civilizations of the Mochica, Nasca, Lambayeque, and Inca. Many cultures throughout history have prophecized and embedded tales of death and rebirth, creation and destruction, and how these are cyclical patterns of the universe, into spiritual, religious and political stories. As the year 2012 approaches, the idea of "the end" seems to be flooding social-consciousness, with myriads of meanings and interpretations from countless reconstructed sources. Goodbye Sunshine reflects the end as a beginning, and that the machinery of the universe continues on regardless of the circumstances or perspective of human thought or tragedy."
