A Collection of Extremely Rare Paper Animals by Juniper Tangpuz
January 10 - February 13, 2011
Mamá Art Cafe in collaboration with Cara and Cabezas Contemporary is pleased to present “A Collection of Extremely Rare Paper Creatures” by Juniper Tangpuz.
The sculptures of Juniper Tangpuz provide entryways into a playful world, perhaps one you have not visited since childhood. Combining subjects (often animals) of the physical world with the intangible stuff of the imagination, Tangpuz creates whimsical works that offer viewers the opportunity to explore their own creativity. His intention is for the viewer to physically interact with his sculptures (which range in scale from handheld to larger-than-life) and by doing so give life to the objects. His work combines contemporary processes of printing and photography with more historic modes of animation to merge the technologies of different eras.
The rare paper animals on display from this exceptional collection are hybrid beings, with species ranging from the elusive Climbing Wizard Beast to the unpredictable Swimmer Rat. All creatures will be available for adoption and are each accompanied by a video of the creature at home in his natural environment.
Juniper Tangpuz, who lives and works in Kansas City, MO, earned a BFA in sculpture from University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. He is a 2nd generation Filipino American, a personal experience that influences his artwork. He has exhibited at numerous galleries including 908 Gallery and Thornhill Gallery at the Avila University. During the summer of 2010, Tangpuz was an artist-in-residence at Process Space in Balchik, Bulgaria.
